Maruping Phepheng’s ashes and fractured moments is lyrical and rhythmic. It is a mourning, a
celebration. It is work of poetry that moves, that emotes, that honours. Indeed our brother Moses Mtileni
will surely be with us forever through Phepheng’s musings. The poems have been organised from a place
of sadness, a place of sadness within which the reader is ushered into fields of hope and love and
friendship. The poems have been titled numerically in Setswana and Xitsonga, an amazing and unique
way indicative of the bond between Phepheng, a Motswana, and Mtileni, a Motsonga. The pieces are
thirty six in total, a number that details Mtileni’s age when he passed on in that winter night of 2019.
Thanks for the poetry, Phepheng. Through ashes and fractured moments I will continue to mourn and
celebrate the life of that young icon called Moses Mtileni, a man who remains my brother and someone I
look up to.
