Hankaroo – the sequel.

To begin at the end, we must admit that Hankaroo is the height of saga.
Hankaroo is a complete work in itself but also a furtherance of the narrative of a preceding work –
What Happens In Hankaroo… (2013), by the same author. It is a fast-paced tale replete with accounts of
sleaze and brazen corruption by self-seeking politicians. Episodes of debauchery and disgrace and
skulduggery burst freely through the pages, just like fictions and legends of witchcraft, proliferating crime
and gratuitous affairs of fun – all set in this post-apartheid imaginary township of Hankaroo.
Hankaroo is a story of two worlds – the good guys from the first instalment, BK, Stoma, and their
trusted John Spade Makeke … these are the guys who put up a fight for the good. And then there is a
cabal of the bad – Taxi Violence, Batista, and Gabuza … they visit untold terror onto the community.
Hankaroo is a daring attempt at depicting everyday life of the ordinary citizen and the high-flying
and powerful. It is a narrative that seeks to bring the reader face to face with herself, with her neighbour,
with her colleague. One page of Hankaroo will make you smile, the other will make you sad, yet the other
will make you fume. It is saga that is both empowering and entertaining, mostly entertaining; it is saga
that grips the mind from beginning to end.
To end like we began, we must admit that Hankaroo is the height of saga.
