eMPorium Works was founded from a simple yet powerful conviction: to live a life shaped by creativity, intellectual curiosity, and meaningful contribution through storytelling.

Established by South African author, biographer, and scholar Dr. Maruping Phepheng, eMPorium Works is more than a writing enterprise — it is the external expression of a lifelong passion for writing, research, and the preservation of human and institutional stories.

The company exists as a space where literature, history, and identity converge — transforming imagination and lived experience into narratives that endure.

Why eMPorium Works Exists

The founding of eMPorium Works was driven by a deeply personal vision: to build an enterprise aligned with the founder’s greatest strengths — writing and research — and to create meaningful value through them.

As Dr. Phepheng explains, the journey began with the desire to shape life according to purpose rather than circumstance. When one realises there is no kingdom waiting to be inherited, one must carve their own — creating something authentic, meaningful, and lasting.

eMPorium Works became that creation.

Dr. Maruping Phepheng

Author | Biographer | Literary Scholar

Dr. Maruping Phepheng is a published South African author, biographer, and literary scholar whose work spans novels, poetry, short stories, and children’s literature. Born in Christiana in the North West Province and raised in Utlwanang township, his background shaped a storytelling voice deeply connected to community, culture, and lived experience.

Since releasing his debut novel What Happens in Hankaroo… in 2013, he has authored several literary works exploring themes of identity, society, morality, love, and human resilience. His novels Tlhokaina and Without Further Ado were longlisted for the Humanities and Social Sciences Awards, recognising his contribution to contemporary South African literature.

Dr. Phepheng holds a Master’s degree in Creative Writing from Rhodes University and a PhD in English Literature from the University of the Western Cape, where he received the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Doctoral Fellowship. His academic and creative expertise enables him to craft narratives that are both intellectually grounded and emotionally compelling.
